Our History

The idea for our dojo was conceived in Rodrigo’s mind back in 2010. He noticed that in large, loud, and crowded fitness gyms, the personal touch and the quality of Jiu-Jitsu training were often compromised. Rodrigo dreamed of a tranquil, friendly space that would do justice to the honorable art of Jiu-Jitsu.

Many attempts and setbacks followed. For years, we were a small group training in various gyms. The Corona pandemic posed significant challenges for us. However, the loyalty of our members strengthened us and carried us through these tough times.

In November 2021, the time had come: We opened our own dojo. This place is more than just a training space for us. It’s a community that values respect and personal growth.

Our Headcoach: Rodrigo

Rodrigo is not just our head coach and the business manager of the dojo; he’s also a man of many talents. As a 3rd Dan black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, trained by Hamilton Caminha and Ricardo Vieira, he brings extensive martial arts experience to the table. His journey began at the age of 5 with Judo and led him to Jiu-Jitsu in 2001.

In addition to his passion for martial arts, Rodrigo is also an engineer in automation technology and has been a certified Yoga teacher under Yogi Sivadas since 2016. His diverse interests range from making music and writing texts to philosophy, natural sciences, and nature hikes.

Rodrigo is known for his ability to connect different ideas. His engineering mindset, BJJ experience, and Yoga intuition blend into a unique training concept. His 6-year stint as a security guard during his Master’s studies also gives him a deep understanding of self-defense and conflict de-escalation.

With him, safe and relaxed training is the focus, where injury prevention is the top priority.

Thank you BJJ Dojo Berlin, for a fantastic year of BJJ training and the opportunity to be part of an appreciative and supportive community. I am very happy to have joined this Dojo and can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in learning or improving Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, with classes for everyone - beginners, hobbyists, ambitious practicioners and competitors of every age and gender. The Dojo provides an inclusive, respectful and clean training environment. Its coaches emphasize safe training practices and utilize up-to-date teaching approaches, aiming for evolving BJJ as a sport and for self defence purposes while focussing on concepts, technical proficiency and sparring. Elements of other martial arts such as judo and wrestling are included in the lessons thus enabling the students to build a well rounded skill set. The teachings are factually grounded and provide detailed explanations of strategy and tactics. A small caveat to consider: A big difference to other martial arts is the possibility of training against a non-cooperative training partner under real-life conditions. Therefore, BJJ-training can be strenuous and mentally demanding. Pay attention to the dojo's safety rules and the abilities of your training partners so that everyone feels comfortable and gets the most out of the training.
