Never trained? Good.

Most people who want to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu hesitate for the same reasons: “I’m not fit enough.” “I don’t know anyone there.” “I don’t want to get hurt.”

That’s exactly what the Intro Course is for. No free sparring, nobody throws you in at the deep end. A coach guides you step by step, and your training partners are learning the same thing as you. We train with respect – for your partner, their pace and their limits.

Small groups with a participant limit make sure everyone gets attention and training stays pleasant and safe.

Whether you’re into martial arts, want to learn self-defence or are simply looking for something new: this is the right place to start.

Explain little. Repeat a lot. You leave every class doing one thing better than when you came in.

What you get

A course built for the very beginning – with a clear structure instead of chance.

A real map of Jiu-Jitsu

24 classes through every main position: guard, mount, side control, back, turtle and standing.

Safety first

How to fall, protect yourself and get back up. No free sparring in the whole course.

Small groups

A participant limit per class. The coach demonstrates, corrects and has time for your questions.

Start any week

Every class stands on its own. No waiting for a new group – just jump in.

One topic per class

No information overload. One clear topic, explained simply, then practised until it sits.

Ready for the next step

After the cycle you join the regular Beginner classes with confidence.

How it works

24

classes

2×

per week

~12

weeks

60

minutes each

Jump in anytime. The course runs in a loop: after class 24 it starts again at class 1. Wherever you begin, you complete the full cycle. For your trial we pick one of classes 1–21 – the last three (turtle, sprawl, takedowns) need some body control.

Real, but never a fight. You practise with light, controlled resistance: enough to make it real, never enough to turn into a competition.

The order you’ll learn it in: Survive → Defend → Escape → Recover → Control → Attack.

What a class looks like

  1. Welcome – a short check-in and the goal of the day in one sentence.
  2. Warm-up (20 minutes) – guided movement: mobility, breakfalls, rolls, hip movement. The warm-up already is training.
  3. Technique – one idea, shown clearly and briefly.
  4. Repeat – practise with a partner while the coach corrects the key details.
  5. Apply – a calm, focused drill. No winner, no free sparring.

The programme: 7 blocks, 24 classes

Every block answers one situation on the mat. Together they give you the full picture.

Block 1 · Classes 1–3: Safety, distance & guard

Fall safely, protect yourself, stand up – and use your legs as your first line of defence.

  • Fall, protect, create distance and stand up
  • Closed guard: close control and posture
  • Guard as a distance cycle
Block 2 · Classes 4–8: Mount, opening & passing

Understand which positions matter and why. Escape the mount, open a closed guard and get past the legs.

  • Mount and upa
  • Opening the closed guard from top
  • Introduction to outside passing
  • Side control: underhooks and stabilisation
  • From side control to mount
Block 3 · Classes 9–11: Mount – escape, control & attack

The most important position, from both sides: get out from under it, stay on top, finish with your first submissions.

  • Elbow-knee escape from mount
  • Mount control
  • Cross-collar choke and armlock from mount
Block 4 · Classes 12–15: Guard attacks & sweeps

Turn your guard into a weapon: collar choke, kimura, armlock, triangle and two classic sweeps.

  • Collar choke from closed guard
  • Kimura and hip bump sweep
  • Armlock and triangle
  • Pendulum and scissor sweeps
Block 5 · Classes 16–19: Retention, passing & side-control escapes

Keep your guard alive, pass with pressure, and get out from under side control.

  • Guard retention against the outside pass
  • Inside pressure pass: knee pin
  • Recovering guard from side control
  • Alternative escapes from side control
Block 6 · Classes 20–21: Back control & defence

Control the back and the basic chokes – and learn to defend and escape them.

  • Back control and basic chokes
  • Neck defence and back escape
Block 7 · Classes 22–24: Turtle, standing & integration

Protect yourself on all fours, sprawl, and your first two takedowns. Standing and ground become one picture.

  • Turtle: protect and face the opponent
  • Front headlock, sprawl and escape
  • Standing: movement, single leg and body fold

Video lessons: we are recording the course techniques right now. They will appear step by step in DOJO TV – included for members.

Safety is the plan

In the Intro Course there is no free sparring, no points and no winner. Resistance stays light and matches the task. From day one you learn the stop signal: tap three times clearly or say “stop” – your partner lets go immediately.

We look after head, neck, shoulders and knees, pair you with experienced, careful partners and adapt the pace to the group. Nobody has to endure anything to prove a point.

Beautiful jiujitsu academy at the Bergmannkiez. From the moment you get in, you can feel the welcoming atmosphere, calm but at the same very clean and sober. Great place to learn good, beautiful jiujitsu. Rodrigo’s style is technical, dynamic and super fun. They also have daily open mats, a big plus for those higher belts looking to get extra rounds in! 10/10 super recommended!

Very nice place to learn jiu jitsu. Rodrigo and his team were very nice to me in my trial class. His members were very close to me in the class trying to teach me every detail and Rodrigo as well. My kid had also his trial class. He’s 7 years old and loved it. I recommend everyone to go to Rodrigo’s dojo and try BJJ, also bring your kids there I’m sure you will enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Fitness comes with training. The warm-up is adapted to the group, and nobody expects you to be fit, flexible or strong on day one.

I have no martial arts experience. Is that a problem?

No – that’s exactly what the Intro Course is for. Most people start with us with no experience at all.

Does BJJ help with self-defence?

Yes. You learn to stay calm, create distance, protect yourself on the ground and get back up – the basics that matter in real situations.

When can I start?

Any week. For your trial class we pick one of classes 1 to 21.

Is there sparring?

There is no free sparring in the Intro Course. You practise with light, controlled resistance.

How big are the groups?

Small. We limit the number of participants so everyone gets attention and training stays safe.

What do I wear to my first class?

Comfortable sportswear with long trousers and a T-shirt. You don’t need a gi at the start.

Does the trial class cost anything?

No, your first class is free.

How much is the Intro Course?

It's included in every membership. The budget plan with 2 classes per week is ideal to start.

Are there videos of the techniques?

The video lessons are being recorded and will appear step by step in DOJO TV – included for members.

Your first class is free

Book a free trial, come in and see how it feels. No pressure – show up once, we’ll take it from there.
