Why Jiu-Jitsu for Kids?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art without punches or kicks. Children learn to win with technique instead of strength – and that changes how they see themselves.

Confidence

On the mat, kids discover that technique matters more than size. They take that feeling with them to school and into everyday life.

Focus and discipline

Clear rules, a calm atmosphere and challenging tasks. Kids learn to keep going – even when it gets hard.

Learning to fight safely

No punching, no kicking. In BJJ we hold, control and tap. Kids can test their full strength without getting hurt.

Strong against bullying

Staying calm, setting boundaries, getting free – without hitting. That gives children security in situations that would otherwise scare them.

Our Approach

We don’t want to create little fighting machines – even if one or two of them do show up at tournaments. For us, Jiu-Jitsu is a way to discover yourself: through movement, challenge and concentration.

Every child learns at their own pace, understands the concepts thoroughly and gradually develops their own style. The mood is relaxed but not chaotic: there are clear rules and respect – and within that frame, lots of freedom.

“In these children I see the successful adults of tomorrow.”

What a Class Looks Like

  1. Warm-up and movement – playful, with fixed rituals and animal movements
  2. Technique – one technique, clearly explained and repeated often
  3. Positional training – practising the technique against real resistance
  4. Supervised sparring – every class includes plenty of rolling. The kids give it everything, the coaches are always there, and safety comes first.

Belts Are Earned

Nobody gets a belt just for showing up. Every stripe and every new belt stands for a lot of training and effort – and that’s exactly why it means something to the kids.

Competitions

Those who want to can compete. Our kids take part regularly, for example at the Combatch Games, with excellent results. Competing is an option, never an obligation.

Our Coaches Are Parents Too

Rodrigo Fernandes is a 3rd-degree black belt, has trained since 2001 and has taught children and teenagers in Germany for more than 15 years. He is a father of two.

All our kids’ coaches and assistants are parents. That matters to us: people who have children of their own bring the patience and understanding kids need.

BJJ DOJO Berlin is part of Checkmat, one of the best-known BJJ teams in the world.

For Parents

You’re always welcome. Parents can watch any time. Many stay, learn along – and now train with us themselves.

A community, not just a class. With trips and events outside the dojo we bring kids and families together.

For the trial class comfortable sportswear (long trousers, T-shirt) and a water bottle are all your child needs.

Beautiful jiujitsu academy at the Bergmannkiez. From the moment you get in, you can feel the welcoming atmosphere, calm but at the same very clean and sober. Great place to learn good, beautiful jiujitsu. Rodrigo’s style is technical, dynamic and super fun. They also have daily open mats, a big plus for those higher belts looking to get extra rounds in! 10/10 super recommended!
