For young women, mothers – and everyone in between

Student, professional or mum: many women come to us because they want to feel safer – on the way home, in everyday life, in their own body. Others are simply looking for a sport that challenges body and mind at the same time.

You don’t need experience or a special level of fitness. We train with respect, in small groups with a participant limit, and you set your own pace.

Self-defence isn’t a trick. It’s the result of training.

Why BJJ is the most effective self-defence for women

Most real attacks end up on the ground or in a clinch – exactly where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is at home.

Technique over strength

Leverage, angles and timing make up for size and weight. That’s what BJJ was built for.

Real resistance

You don’t practise in the air, but against partners who really fight back – controlled, but honest.

Pressure and adrenaline

In sparring and competition you learn to stay calm under stress. That’s exactly what you need when it gets serious.

Safe on the ground

Escape holds, create distance, get back up – through thousands of repetitions.

Honestly: you don’t learn self-defence in a weekend

There are no tricks that make you safe after two hours. Real self-defence comes from regular training: moving your body well, escaping control positions, recognising danger early – and handling adrenaline and pressure.

Our head coach Rodrigo Fernandes worked in security in difficult areas for six years. His experience: the adrenaline rush of a real confrontation feels very similar to a hard sparring round or a competition. If you know that feeling from the mat, you are far more likely to stay capable of acting on the street.

That’s why the women’s class is an ideal way in – and the next step is training in the mixed classes, with bigger and heavier partners, and, if you want, your first competition.

Women’s class on Saturdays

Every Saturday we run a dedicated women’s class. It’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training – led by coaches who are competition athletes themselves. In a relaxed atmosphere among women you learn the fundamentals: movement, positions, escapes.

The women’s class is the perfect way in. You’ll make the biggest progress when you also train in the mixed classes – with stronger and heavier partners who really challenge you. If you have no experience, start with our Intro Course for beginners.

For mothers: time for yourself

Between work, family and everything else, there’s often little time left for you. One hour on the mat is training, balance and a clear head all in one.

Many parents of our kids started training themselves after watching their children’s classes. Kids from age 4 have their own classes, and on Fridays there’s an Open Mat for kids and families.

Beautiful jiujitsu academy at the Bergmannkiez. From the moment you get in, you can feel the welcoming atmosphere, calm but at the same very clean and sober. Great place to learn good, beautiful jiujitsu. Rodrigo’s style is technical, dynamic and super fun. They also have daily open mats, a big plus for those higher belts looking to get extra rounds in! 10/10 super recommended!

Very nice place to learn jiu jitsu. Rodrigo and his team were very nice to me in my trial class. His members were very close to me in the class trying to teach me every detail and Rodrigo as well. My kid had also his trial class. He’s 7 years old and loved it. I recommend everyone to go to Rodrigo’s dojo and try BJJ, also bring your kids there I’m sure you will enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best self-defence for women?

One that works without a strength advantage and is trained against real resistance. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on leverage, control and escapes – even against bigger, heavier opponents. What really matters is regular training: sparring and competition prepare you for pressure and adrenaline.

Is a women's self-defence course enough?

A workshop can give you important ideas – on its own it won't make you safe. Self-defence comes from repetition: escaping control positions, building your body and learning to stay calm under pressure. That's why our occasional self-defence workshops with guest coaches complement regular BJJ training.

How do I defend myself as a woman?

First: recognise danger, keep your distance, speak up, walk away. If it gets physical, what counts is escaping holds, protecting yourself on the ground and getting back up. That's exactly what we practise, step by step.

What am I allowed to do in self-defence in Germany?

Self-defence is permitted in Germany when it is necessary to fend off a present attack (§ 32 StGB). In training, the focus is on avoiding situations, escaping and getting to safety. For legal questions about a specific case, please consult a lawyer.

Do I need experience or fitness?

No. Most women start with us with no experience. Fitness comes with training.

Is there a women-only class?

Yes, our women's class runs on Saturdays. For the biggest progress we recommend also joining the mixed classes.

Can I bring my child as a mother?

Kids from age 4 have their own classes, and on Fridays there's an Open Mat for kids and families. Many families train with us together.

What do I wear to my first class?

Comfortable sportswear with long trousers and a T-shirt. You don't need a gi at the start.

Does the trial class cost anything?

No, your first class is free.
