What is an open mat?

There’s no set class at open mat. The mat is yours: work on your positions, drill situations with a partner or simply spar – as much or as little as you like.

We don’t have an “advanced class”. Our classes teach the fundamentals; open mat is where you build your own game. That’s why open mat is for everyone – from the blue belt with competition plans to the black belt who just wants to roll.

How open mat works

Free, but not on your own.

Build your game

Work on whatever is on your mind – guard, passing, takedowns, leg locks. Nobody hands you a programme.

Questions welcome

Head coach Rodrigo Fernandes is on the mat almost every night. Ask him: he corrects, shows details and gives your game a direction – if you want.

Spar with strong partners

At open mat you’ll meet people who train seriously. That’s how you get better: against real resistance.

Respect for every level

Train hard and look after your partner. Tap early, roll with control, bring beginners along.

Beautiful jiujitsu academy at the Bergmannkiez. From the moment you get in, you can feel the welcoming atmosphere, calm but at the same very clean and sober. Great place to learn good, beautiful jiujitsu. Rodrigo’s style is technical, dynamic and super fun. They also have daily open mats, a big plus for those higher belts looking to get extra rounds in! 10/10 super recommended!

Very nice place to learn jiu jitsu. Rodrigo and his team were very nice to me in my trial class. His members were very close to me in the class trying to teach me every detail and Rodrigo as well. My kid had also his trial class. He’s 7 years old and loved it. I recommend everyone to go to Rodrigo’s dojo and try BJJ, also bring your kids there I’m sure you will enjoy.
